As mentioned previously, United Airlines MileagePlus Miles are typically sold at USD 35 (SGD 47) per 1,000 block of miles and under this 60% bonus promotion, the cost per 1,000 miles would be lowered to USD 21.88 (SGD 29) if you purchase at least 30,000 miles. Do note that a tax recovery fee (non-refundable) of 7.5% will also be levied on top of the aforementioned costs.
In order to benefit from 60% more miles, I will have to purchase at least 30,000 miles for USD 1,128.75 (SGD 1496.50) - this will give me 48,000 United Airlines MileagePlus Miles. In case you do not already know, the new Star Alliance Award Chart (effective from 01 November 2017) published by United Airlines requires only 8,000 United Airlines MileagePlus Miles for all award tickets in Economy Class for itineraries with 800 miles or less. This means to say that you can easily fly one-way in Economy Class from Singapore to the following destinations for just 8,000 United Airlines MileagePlus Miles for around SGD 250 before taxes:
- Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
- Jakarta (CGK)
- Ho Chi Minh City (SGN)
- Bandar Seri Begawan (BWN)
While this may not sound like a good deal at all, it is great for those last minute travels or peak-period travel if you may require them. Needless to say, you should always evaluate your travel plans before purchasing miles as they may or may not be worthwhile depending on the way you use them.
