Hotel Review: Conrad Bangkok (Executive Suite)
When I visited Bangkok two years ago, I stayed at the Conrad Bangkok and got upgraded into an Executive Deluxe Corner Room for simply being a Hilton HHonors Gold member - it used to be pretty standard to expect a double upgrade when you are a Gold member but I hear this has now been changed to a single upgrade instead. Anyhow, I really enjoyed my previous stay at this property and even though it was definitely showing signs of age, the service at this property remains to be one of the best that I have experienced in the city (the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok beats this property hands down though!).
As the Conrad Bangkok was running at pretty high occupancy when I visited, my room was upgraded to an Executive Suite (71sqm) as a Diamond Hilton HHonors member for my one-night stay. In fact, prior to arriving at the property, I could see that my room was upgraded into a much larger Deluxe Suite (114sqm) on the Hilton HHonors app but for some reason, I was given a smaller suite upon checking-in - pretty strange! Anyhow, I was still really happy with my suite as it was almost double the size of the previous room that I was in.
The living room of the Executive Suite comes with a comfortable sofa (where I spent most of my afternoon on), a small table in front of it and more importantly, a full-sized work desk for you to get things done (because the bed just isn't too productive!). As mentioned earlier, the Conrad Bangkok is a pretty old property and therefore a lot of the power sockets are not universal - you will still require some kind of a international travel adapter for your power-hungry gadgets. If you are traveling for pleasure (or even for work), there is even an older version of Playstation 3 in the Executive Suite - feel free to reach out to the Concierge for games to loan. The suite also comes with a mini-refrigerator and minibar outside in the living room with a coffee machine on top.
While the TVs (one in the bedroom and one in the living room) do work pretty OK generally, it is in need of a refresh - Smart TVs are kind of the new standard now - so hopefully a refurbishment happens soon enough! As a Diamond Hilton HHonors member, I was also given a platter of fruits, some chocolate-coated strawberries and a bag of rice crisps as a welcome amenity.
The slightly odd-shaped bedroom of the Executive Suite at the Conrad Bangkok is partitioned away by an actual door - you can also lock this for privacy if you are entertaining guests but do keep in mind that there is only one bathroom in this suite. The mattress did not seem to feature a pillow-top so if you enjoy a soft and fluffy bed, you might have some trouble getting to sleep here but if you do enjoy a bed that provides more back support, well, you might just find heaven right here. Since these rooms and suites have not been refreshed for quite a while, you will not be able to find a power socket by the bed to charge your mobile phone (almost a necessity these days).
The bedroom in the Executive Suite has another TV so you can still enjoy your favourite programmes or news in bed. A variety of magazines are also provided in the bedroom for your reading pleasure.
One good thing about the odd-shaped bedroom is that the floor-to-ceiling windows offer a pretty impressive view of the hotel's surroundings. While I do not think it overlooks any prominent landmarks in Bangkok (I could be wrong!), somehow having a view of the city from a vantage point makes city living so much more comfortable.
One of the things guests of Conrad hotels do is to collect the various stuffed animal toys from various properties across the world. Similar to my previous visit in 2014, the Conrad Bangkok gives out an adorable toy elephant - if you have kids and you want extras, just ask the housekeeping or Concierge nicely. If all else fails, you can always purchase more from the gift shop at a reasonable fee (plus you earn Hilton HHonors points when you charge it to the room!).
It is worth noting that the Executive Suite only has one bathroom (there is no power room in the living room) and therefore if you are having guests over, they will actually have to make their way through your living room and bedroom just to use the bathroom - I don't suppose many of us will be taking our business guests up to the suite but just so you know.
The spacious bathrooms at the Conrad Bangkok is always something to look forward to - the oversized tub provides for a deep and relaxing soak after an afternoon out and there's even a small TV where you can watch your favourite programs from the tub. I can't stress on the importance of a good tub in Bangkok and if you don't seem to see the charm of it, try spending the whole afternoon out in the sun at the Chatuchak Weekend Market before coming back to your room or suite.
Unlike some other hotel chains that provide different amenities in basic rooms and suites, the Conrad Bangkok (as part of the brand's standards) provides the standard Aromatherapy Associates bathroom amenities in room. Do remember that you can always indicate your preferences for one of the following brands when you make your reservation (or even during your stay with the Conrad Concierge app):
- Aromatherapy Associates (Default)
- The Refinery
- Tara Smith Haircare
- Shanghai Tang
Like most luxury hotels, club guests will have the option of having a full buffet breakfast at the main restaurant or enjoy a smaller continental selection at the Club Lounge. I do remember the breakfast at Cafe@2 to be quite decent from my last visit so I've decided to brave the crowd downstairs for breakfast instead. Getting a table during the peak hour proves to be fairly painful (as I have remembered from the last visit) but once you have been assigned a table, you should be able to enjoy your breakfast in peace. When I visited in March 2016, the entire restaurant seemed to be overrun by individuals from group travel so there was plenty of shouting and talking; diners were also switching tables on their own so that made the morning situation a nightmare.
I ended up leaving Cafe@2 after a few minutes as I did not wish to deal with the chaos - I proceeded to the Executive Lounge for breakfast instead since I do have the option of doing so (from my Hilton HHonors Diamond Status as well as the Executive Suite privileges). Even though the selection was significantly smaller, the Executive Lounge is a lot quieter and cleaner - the coffee served was also of a higher standard since I do not think I could choose beyond brewed coffee at the main restaurant. There is also an egg station in case you are wondering so for the sake of your own sanity, do yourself a favour and have breakfast here instead.
If you intend to stay at the Conrad Bangkok, be sure to visit the freeform swimming pool located on level seven. In fact, the hotel places so much on fitness and wellness that you will even find a decent-sized Bodyworx Fitness Center with a 24-hour gym with sauna, aerobics and stea rooms. The heated outdoor swimming pool is also a joy to swim in regardless of the time of day and if you want to run outdoors, check out the hotel's rooftop running track. There are also two tennis courts at the Conrad Bangkok that are available for hire and use.
Even though Conrad hotels are predominantly luxury business hotels, the Conrad Bangkok has the right facilities to serve as a premier accommodation option for leisure guests. The swimming pool is also one of the best that I have been to in Bangkok and this swimming pool even trumps the one in the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.
If you are a Hilton HHonors Member looking for a place to stay in Bangkok, the Conrad Bangkok is an obvious choice - it is conveniently on Wireless Road and it is located just a short stroll away from Ploenchit BTS. In fact, if you enjoy a decent walk, you can easily make your way down to Siam from the hotel as there is a sheltered walkway that will take you there directly (20-25 minutes). While the property definitely exudes signs of wear and tear, the service level here is still excellent and it remains to be one of my personal favourite hotels in the City of Angels.
