Hotel Review: Conrad Centennial Singapore (Centennial Suite)

It has been ages since I've stayed in a Hilton property and since I've made plans to see a performance at the Mastercard Theatres in Marina Bay Sands, I thought it would be a great idea to check out the Conrad Centennial Singapore once again. Last year, I checked out the Executive Room at the Conrad Centennial Singapore.

Since I arrived at the property before the official check-in time, my room was not yet ready - in fact, it was such a busy weekend that it was running at full occupancy. I asked if I could get a coffee from the Executive Lounge politely while waiting and was quickly shown to the lounge with a window seat. There wasn't really a crowd at the Executive Lounge since it was post-breakfast timing so most people who were there were catching up on the news or just glued to their laptops.

I made use of the opportunity to catch up on my subscriptions - I love receiving these Monocle Magazines (amongst other publications that I read) on a monthly basis but truth to be told, I have not actually read them for the longest time. After a coffee and significant reading, I decided to leave my bag with one of the lounge staff and head out for lunch instead.

When I got back from lunch at 2PM, my room still wasn't ready and since check-in time is not until 3PM, I spent more time catching up on work and weekend reads in the lounge. As much as I did enjoy my time in the Executive Lounge, I really just wanted to get in the room.

For this stay, I took advantage of the previous Discover Asia sale (up to 30% off) and saved quite a bit on the Centennial Suite reservation. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the location of the Conrad Centennial Singapore, it is located next to Millenia Walk and if you are coming by MRT, the closest stop would be Promenade on the Circle Line. If you know the way, you can also get off at City Hall MRT Station but it's a much longer walk. Most of the Centennial Suites are located at the end of each corridor and the first thing you will notice as you enter the suite is the amount of natural daylight that comes through the tall (almost) floor-to-ceiling glass windows. I love the large spacious couch by the window which was pretty much where I spent the rest of my afternoon catching up on work.

As a Gold Member of the Hilton Honors loyalty program, I was given a fruit platter, a box of chocolate truffles and a Conrad Centennial Singapore SG50 teddybear (since I stayed before National Day this year) to take home. The Centennial Suite comes with Executive benefits (more on this later) and it is approximately 63 sqm in size. On top of Executive benefits, the Centennial Suite also comes with a range of suite-specific benefits that were subjected to availability:

  • 2 Hours Meeting Room Usage (subjected to availability)
  • Late Check-out at 6PM (subjected to availability)
  • Complimentary Local Calls
  • Complimentary Light Pressing on Arrival (up to 5 items)
  • Personalised Butler Service (available upon request prior to arrival)
  • 20% off a la carte Spa Treatments
  • 15 Types of Pillows from Pillow Menu
  • Complimentary Music and Movie Selection

The layout of the Centennial Suite was slightly awkward - to get to the bathroom from the moment you enter the suite, you have to get through the living area and the bedroom. By the time you have gone through these two rooms, you have already completed three to four turns. The bedroom of the Centennial Suite comes with the iconic high and plush bed (one of my favourites in Singapore!). There is also an extensive pillow menu (with 15 types as mentioned previously) that you may select from.

While I do agree that the rooms in the Conrad Centennial Singapore look a little tired and are definitely in need of some light refreshing, the quality of the product is still top-notch. You get some of the best hotel service in Singapore and the rooms while looking tired are still very well-maintained. With that being said, I have heard that the rooms will be undergoing some significant refurbishments soon and they should be ready towards the later part of next year - more on this when news become available officially! The bedroom also comes with an awkwardly-placed TV (inside the cabinet) where you will not be able to watch from the comfort of your bed unless you are comfortable with turning your head sideways for the whole duration of the movie. I did however like that the bed was facing the large windows which show off the beauty of the Singapore skyline.

The Centennial Suite comes with a beautifully-appointed large marble bathroom with two sinks, a deep soaking tub, a toilet and a separate shower area (with no rainshower). If your eyes are sharp enough, you would have already spotted the yellow rubber duckling by the bathtub which you are once again free to bring home. You would be surprise at how much people love these Conrad collectibles (since they are largely different from property to property) and how frequent travellers are willing trade these goodies for another online. Bathroom amenities are provided by the Aromatherapy Associates be default although you can easily request for Shanghai Tang, The Refinery or Tara Smith amenities over the phone or the Conrad Concierge app (my personal choice).

Having Executive Access means having access to the Executive Lounge (amongst other benefits) and this includes a champagne breakfast (or a full buffet breakfast at Oscar's), afternoon tea, evening cocktails and hors d'oeuvres as well as access to an all-day open bar (uh-huh you've read that right). Although I was not able to make it for the evening cocktails (shocking really!) since I had to go see a play at the Marina Bay Sands, I did drop by the Executive Lounge for some quick afternoon tea. The best part about the Executive Lounge is the all-day open bar which makes cocktail hour in the evening a bit of a bore since you know, you can drink anytime you want.

The Afternoon Tea spread includes the usual suspects - scones, sandwiches, cold cuts and some desserts. I liked that it was a really private affair but at the same time, do note that the Executive Lounge is not exactly huge so if you want the good seats with a view, be sure to come in early (same goes for the evening cocktails!).

I got back to the Centennial Suite pretty late after the play at the Marina Bay Sands and the lights around the Fountain of Wealth have already been shut off - still quite a sight to behold!

As an Executive guest, you may choose between having champagne breakfast at the Executive Lounge or a full buffet breakfast at Oscar's - I generally prefer the latter option for variety. As the hotel was running on full occupancy, there was a line when I got down to Oscar's and had to wait for approximately 5-10 minutes before I was shown to my table. The breakfast spread was pretty decent and is definitely in line with what you would expect from a five star luxury hotel.

The Conrad Centennial Singapore continues to be one of the best hotels to stay in the City Hall area. With the upcoming refurbishment plans ahead, I can only envision this property to improve in the near future. Besides, with the number of promotions that stack with Conrad stays, one can definitely benefit from 8,000 to 12,000 Hilton Honors Points easily with just a weekend stay - sufficient for one night in Doubletree Johor Bahru or Kuala Lumpur!
