Hotel Review: Grand Hyatt Hong Kong (Victoria Harbour Suite)
As part of my extended vacation in November 2016, I flew directly from Haneda Airport to Hong Kong International Airport via ANA's 787-900 on Business Class. The most memorable hotel during my short stay in Hong Kong has got to be the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong which has in recent years, gone through a series of extensive multi-million dollar renovation phases. Located on Harbour Road in Wan Chai, the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is situated next to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre which makes it a popular accommodation choice amongst business travellers.

I took an Uber ride from The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong to get to the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong - do note that there is a Western Harbor Crossing Toll of HK$60 (S$11) that you may be required to pay. To fully appreciate the beauty of one of the world's most famous harbours, I stayed in a Victoria Harbour Suite at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong - apparently David Beckham has personally stayed in one of these as well! While hotel rooms in Hong Kong are typically quite small, the rooms here at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong are definitely on the larger side - Grand Deluxe Rooms (lead-in category) start from 40sqm.
The Victoria Harbour Suite that I stayed in was 90sqm in size and it features a 270-degree view of Hong Kong's famous skyline which was truly impressive (more on this later!). Upon entering the Victoria Harbour Suite, you will not immediately be blown away by the view - there is a small passage in the house which leads you to a half bathroom, the most amazing bathroom, well-appointed bedroom, and finally, the stunning living area.
The Victoria Harbour Suite here at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong features a dining table (enough to accommodate six to eight guests comfortably), a separate living space and more importantly, an incredible view of the Victoria Harbour - seriously, coming from the ultra-luxurious (and expensive!) Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong, this view here at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is simply unbeatable!
I have been to suites and villas that are bigger than 90sqm but this is by far my favourite suite - the views from the living room (and the bedroom!) are spectacular and it definitely exudes a luxurious but yet homely charm. You will also find a 46-inch TV here in the living room which is well-stocked with over 40 digital and TV channels.
That massive three-seater sofa does not convert into a bed (someone actually messaged me on Instagram to ask so I thought I would just mention). As part of my welcome amenities, I received a bowl of fresh fruits, a bottle of red wine and a selection of snacks.
If by any chance, you do get tired of the iconic Victoria Harbour view (how could you?!), you will also get to enjoy a view of the beautifully-landscaped pool from the living room - this is just one of the many perks for staying in the Victoria Harbour Suite! In fact, not only will you gain access to the luxurious two-storey Grand Club lounge which is located on levels 30 and 31 of the hotel, you will also get to enjoy perks that only esteemed guests of the Victoria Harbour Suite will get to enjoy:
- Complimentary Minibar (including alcoholic beverages)
- Unlimited Paid Movies
- 3 Pieces of Laundry or Pressing per Stay
Unlike some hotels where only non-alcoholic drinks are offered, guests of the Victoria Harbour Suite will get to enjoy the entire minibar (including the spirit miniatures photographed above) at no additional charge! In fact, since I have been traveling for close to ten days, the complimentary laundry and pressing came in very handy (and just in time!) for me personally. There is also a Nespresso machine located inside the suite - in fact, disposable paper cups were also thoughtfully provided in the suite so you can have them to-go (plus points for the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong!).
The bedroom of the Victoria Harbour Suite offers the same impressive view of the harbour and it is accessible via the living room and the bathroom. You will find another TV in the room with a huge selection of cable and digital channels here for your personal enjoyment. There is also a small chair by the window if you wish to indulge in some reading but honestly, if you are staying in a Victoria Harbour Suite, just go crazy in the living room - why sit when you can lie down on the sofa?!
A handy smartphone is also provided to guests of the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong - you will be able to take this out of the hotel and you can use it for getting directions, recommendations or simply to use it as a hotspot to tether a stable 4G connection to your real phone. Since I did not actually purchase a SIM Card for Hong Kong, this came in extremely useful and using a tethered 4G connection meant that I could have my iPhone set on Airplane Mode - this uses a lot less battery!
I also love how you can essentially control all the lights from the bedside - you can even close the automated day and night blinds. You will also notice that the air-conditioning can be adjusted here so there is really no need to leave your bed for anything at all. If you are a slave to technology, you will even be able to charge your phone and other gadgets by the side of your bed since a power outlet and USB ports are thoughtfully provided.
The bedroom looks into the amazing bathroom directly - with that being said, it is still possible to maintain privacy by lowering the automated blinds in front of the bathtub. There is also a sliding door (which doubles as a full-length mirror) which partitions the bathroom away from the bedroom.
The bathroom in the Victoria Harbour Suite is massive and it is definitely one of the best impressive ones that I have ever been to. Not only does it allow you to enjoy a view of the Victoria Harbour while you are enjoying a soak in the tub (honestly, it is big enough for four adults but I am not suggesting or advocating anything), you will also be able to watch your favourite TV shows since there is an ad notam mirror TV hidden by the side of the tub. The bathroom is also connected directly to a walk-in wardrobe where there is ample space to hang up your clothes, place your luggage, store your valuables and probably sleep in (but why would you!?).
The bathroom also features a double sink and a sizeable rain-shower. The only thing to note however is that this bathroom does not have a toilet but you can access the half bathroom outside (it is connected!).
Bath amenities like all the other Grand Hyatt properties that I have been to, are provided by June Jacobs Spa Collection. Similar to the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur's Grand Suite which I stayed in back in 2015, the bath amenities are 120ml in size (instead of the usual 60ml ones) and it features a Citrus scent (instead of the Green Tea and Cucumber series) which is similar to what I got back in the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok. These bath amenities were also generous replenished at turn-down and during make-up room service in the morning so feel free to use them excessively for the most amazing bath experience.
I love how spacious the Victoria Harbour Suite at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is and while I did not actually utilise the dining room for its designed purpose, it was a great space to have since it added to the whole living area - besides, where else are you going to snack on those takeaway supper that you have gotten?
While the Victoria Harbour Suite was truly a beautiful space, the landscaped gardens and swimming pool here at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong was even more impressive - it reminded me a little of the gardens at the Grand Hyatt Singapore but definitely on a much larger and grander scale. With a reputation of being one of the busiest and fast-paced cities in the world, the gardens here at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong truly exudes a sense of peacefulness and calmness that is not commonly associated to the City of Light. If you are looking for a way to escape the stressful city life without wanting to wander too far off, the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong offers a convenient break right in the heart of the city.
The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong does have a pretty impressive free-form swimming pool that the Victoria Harbour Suite looks out to as well (it does after all, have a 270-degree view of Hong Kong). This is the perfect place to kick back with a cocktail or a beer while enjoying the sun during the summer months!
The two-storey Grand Club (located on level 30 and 31) at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong has only just completed a massive refurbishment in recent years and is therefore looking fresh - the design and colour scheme is simple and adequately minimal for esteemed club guests to enjoy the view of the famous Victoria Harbour instead.
Guests who have access to the amazing Grand Club will be to enjoy free-flowing Champagne all day (they are serving Ruinart in case you are interested), complimentary made-to-order breakfast, snacks as well as evening cocktails and canepes. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the Grand Club Lounge at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong also offers a unique bird's eye view of the famous harbour as well as the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.
Like most club lounges, the Grand Club is the busiest during the cocktail hours in the evening so make sure you do come by early if you wish to get a table by the window. Outside this period, the Grand Club is generally quite quiet and it is perfect for getting work done over some coffee (or Champagne, if you like).
The breakfast selection at the Grand Club is not extensive but you do get the benefit of space and privacy - it is difficult to compete with the newly-refurbished Grand Cafe (which has been given a massive makeover) in terms of variety.
Honestly, if the Victoria Harbour Suite that I stayed in did not have such an amazing view, I would be here at the Grand Club all day. The amount of space here - especially with the floor-to-ceiling windows that span across both floors - is just incredible and looking out to that bustling city within the comforts of the Grand Club is truly a fuzzy feeling.
Any stay at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong will not be complete without enjoying the extensive breakfast selection at the newly-refreshed Grand Cafe - breakfast runs from 6:30AM to 10:00AM and 11:00AM on weekdays and weekends (including public holidays) respectively. The space itself is amazing but the food quality and variety truly takes the cake.
I was spoiled for choice during my two-night stay at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and in spite of the morning crowd, I was happy to wait for a table because the food was absolutely delicious. There was a good selection of international dishes and Asian dishes but the latter definitely performed better than the former. The coffee here is great too so make sure you do order yourself an espresso-based coffee!
Grand Cafe is currently led by Chef de Cuisine Marc Briol and it offers an all-day a la care menu from 11:00AM as well as a daily dinner buffet from 6:00PM to 10:00PM.
The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is truly a league of its own - it stays true to the brand standards and it goes over and above what is necessary to create a property that excels not only in impeccable service but through modern and clean design that truly showcases the beauty of its surroundings. Coming from The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong (where I spent only a night due to the crazy high room rates), the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong has won my heart completely - the rates are much more reasonable - you get a suite here at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong (as opposed to a club room at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong) for a similar price.
There's plenty to eat around the property and in the event you are up for local recommendations - approach any one of the staff (and I do not just mean the concierge) for them to share their love of food. If you are up for fine dining, there are also various restaurants with Michelin-stars in Hong Kong Island where the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is located in - if you wish to head over to Kowloon for a more local feel and experience, hop on the Star Ferry for a nominal fee and you will be there in no time. All in all, the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong left me wanting for more (nights) and I simply cannot think of a better place to experience this beautiful city (and all its amazing food) than this property right here.
