Hotel Review: Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore (Club Room)
Located in downtown Tanjong Pagar, the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore's facade is unmistakably one of the boldest and most unique in the area. Featuring an impressive vertical garden amidst an urban backdrop, the 27-storey tall business hotel offers beautifully-appointed rooms in the heart of Singapore's Central Business District - it is also just minutes away from Raffles Place, Clarke Quay, Sentosa, Orchard Road and Marina Bay. This is Far East Hospitality's second Oasia-branded property in Singapore and as part of brand standards, it is built upon the three wellness pillars - Recharge, Refuel and Refresh.
It's easy to find your way to Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore when the Tanjong Pagar MRT Station is located less than a minute walk away. While I have stayed in many club rooms and have had accesses to various club lounges around the world, I have to say that the Club experience at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore is one of the most distinctive ones that I have had. Prior to staying in a Club Room at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore, I have also stayed in a Superior Room on my own for two nights so I can really compare between the two different products.
Once you arrive at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore, take the lift straight up to the Club Floor - you will not have trouble accessing the club floor if you are coming in from the hotel's main lobby area. Personally, this to me, is already a huge plus - while a separate check-in area for club guests is not unique to the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore, it is not uncommon to see hotels restricting access to these floors and therefore hampering on the whole private check-in benefit since you actually need to go to the main reception first, have them locate your reservation before being ushered off to the club lounge for check-in (if it happens).
You will definitely notice how beautiful the Club Floor is - it isn't just a level where the Club Lounge is located. For many hotels around the world, a Club Room is basically a basic room that is located on a higher floor (with the exact same layout) with access to the club lounge and its associated benefits. Here at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore, a Club Room offers a completely different experience right from the moment you walk in.
After arriving at the Club Floor, I was quickly greeted by one of the friendly staff there and was offered a glass of coconut water (that's right, not just regular iced water) to beat the sweltering heat. I sat by the beautiful infinity pool while waiting for my check-in documents to be prepared. They came over shortly to verify my details and I was given my room key(card) pretty quickly - nothing like a fuss-free check-in! I decided to linger on a little longer on the Club Floor to soak in the breeze and the view. It is definitely worth nothing that this impressive looking Infinity Pool that overlooks the iconic Pinnacle @ Duxton can only be accessed by club guests. That's right, there may be two smaller pools on the top floor for every registered hotel guest to enjoy but this pool is exclusive to club guests only!
As mentioned earlier on, I have stayed two nights in a Superior Room (lead-in room category) here at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore when it first opened but it was my first time checking the Club Room out. Located on the higher floors of the hotel, the Club Rooms are 28sqm in size (about 20% larger than the Superior and Deluxe Rooms) but more importantly, they offer a free-standing tub that is not found in the regular rooms. The difference between a Superior and Deluxe room is pretty minute - I would say the view is the differentiating factor - but the difference between a Superior and Club Room is huge!
The layout of the Club Room is pretty unique and the bathroom is partitioned away by sliding doors that you can open up for a greater sense of space. I love the bedroom a lot - you will even find a pillow mist by To Be Calm (something that is not found in regular rooms!) to help you wind down and relax after a day out. If you think the design of the rooms is pretty familiar, it is designed by the renowned Spanish designer, Patricia Urquiola.
I love how you can open up the sliding door in the bathroom to give an impression of a larger space. The tinted bathroom glass makes it easy to look out from but difficult to look into but with that being said, this is probably something that you should be mindful of if you are thinking about sharing this room with a friend that you are not that close with. It is definitely more suited towards couples (traveling together or on a weekend staycation) and individuals.
Depending on where your Club Room is located, you may get a different view but I did have a pretty impressive view of the surrounding area. I know some of the rooms face the infinity pool on the Club Floor directly so YMMV.
As part of the benefits for being a Club guest, you will have a complimentary minibar for your personal enjoyment. Before you get too excited, only bottled water (sparkling and still) as well as coconut water are found inside the minibar - you should head down to the Club Lounge for unlimited alcohol during evening cocktail hours or just check out Cin Cin (located on street level) for some delicious gin-based cocktails. The Club Rooms here at Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore also enjoy TWG Tea Bags and Tripod Coffee which are Nespresso-compatible coffee capsules from Australia.
The free-standing bathtub alone should offer good enough reason to trade-up into a Club Room (more on the amazing club benefits later!) - there is also a separate rain-shower by the side of the tub so you are essentially not required to choose between a tub or a shower. I also appreciated the fact that there is a small space between the tub and the side of the wall to place an iPad (or your snacks even!) there while you enjoy a good soak.
Bath amenities in the Club Room at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore are provided by Biology Smart Skincare and the THANN-branded ones (which were used previously) are slowly phasing out.
Similar to other hotels, a Club Room here would gain you access to the exclusive Club Lounge located on Level 21 (the same level as the Club Floor of course). As part of your benefits for being a club guest, you will be able to enjoy breakfast at the Club Lounge (or Marmalade Pantry downstairs), unlimited evening cocktails from 6PM to 8PM daily, the mini-bar, 2 pieces of laundry service per room per day (non-accumulative) and of course the private infinity pool that I have previously mentioned. It is definitely worth noting that even though the Club Lounge is not too big in size, it is actually really beautifully done up and you can order barista-style coffee (made with real espresso shots!) throughout the day.
The Club Lounge can probably sit around 30-40 guests comfortably so be sure to get in early (especially during evening cocktail hours) if you want a table by the window. Otherwise, feel free to grab a seat outside on the Club Floor - it is actually super breezy since the floor is unobstructed and open from all four sides. Since I got to the Club Lounge pretty late for evening cocktails, I decided to sit outside where it was a lot quieter for drinks instead.
Some light finger bites were also served alongside the drinks in the evening - they do get snatched up pretty quickly though! If you are looking for a quick (alcoholic) fix, the Club Lounge is the way to go but if you are picky about what you drink, you should definitely head down to Cin Cin instead. Honestly, the food was pretty average but hey how can you complain when you have got two hours worth of free-flowing alcoholic beverages?
As I have mentioned multiple times throughout the article, the infinity pool on the Club Floor is only made available to Club guests and if you are lucky enough, you may be greeted with this amazing sunset view while looking out to the beautiful pool. Obviously, you are also very much welcomed to take a dip in the evening as well while you soak in the sights.
Since I was still feeling a little peckish after the evening cocktails at the Club Lounge, I decided to head down to the Marmalade Pantry (located on street level of the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore) for dinner. Even though Marmalade Pantry is not a new restaurant, I have never actually been there until the night that I stayed over at the hotel. It is one of those places that I have always heard about but have never found enough reason to head down until now.
While the Marmalade Pantry has a pretty extensive dining menu, I was craving a little local that night and was therefore pleasantly surprised to see that they have got a smaller local menu as well. I opted for the Singapore Hokkien Noodles without much expectation and that was definitely one of the best versions I have had! Packed with fresh seafood like scallops, squids and prawns, the Singapore Hokkien Noodles also came with freshly-squeezed lime (in a jug) on the side and delicious sambal that I want to take home. Obviously you do pay a premium for this here at the Marmalade Pantry but I honestly think that it was definitely worth it!
I also took the opportunity to try out The Marmalade Steak and Eggs (yes, I know it isn't breakfast) since I couldn't resist the temptation - 150 day grain fed 250g ribeye with crushed
roasted squash, fried egg and thyme jus done up perfectly - the beef was tender and the runny yolks and that thyme jus just all went too well together. I only wish the beef was a thicker cut instead.
As a Club guest, I had the option of having breakfast at the Marmalade Pantry or the Club Lounge. Since I was just at the Marmalade Pantry in the evening, I decided that a quieter breakfast in the Club Lounge was a better idea instead.
The breakfast selection was quite small but you do get to select from a number of eggs cooked the way you like. There's no need to wait in line at the egg station as well since every thing happens at the back (where it is hidden away from you) and your orders are taken by the lounge staff instead.
I did eventually find some time to actually take a dip inside the infinity pool on the Club Floor - there are various spots for you to lounge about and honestly I can spend an entire morning here using the facilities and enjoying a good book (as well as coffee of course!).
My favourite spot has got to be these beds that are located by the pool but surrounded by greenery. Resembling little tents, these spots are amazing to lie in with a great book or magazine in hand (also good for people-watching if the opportunity arises). The Club Room experience here at Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore truly extends beyond just having a Club Lounge to retreat to.
Shower facilities are also located by the side for a quick rinse-off before you head back to your tub in your room for a proper scrub down.
There are two rooftop pools at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore that all hotel guests can take advantage of - the two pools (one on each side) are quite small but since they face directly opposite directions, at least one pool will always be in the shade for those of you that want to escape the sun. Still, the rooftop pools pale in comparison when compared to the infinity on the club floor.
I do like the swings by the pools on the rooftop though - I really do appreciate the 'living' space that the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore offers for hotel guests and to encourage them to get out of the room and use the facilities around instead.
Finally, if you are looking for a place to work up a sweat, the 24-hour gym is your best bet. It is definitely not a big space but it has all the basic facilities for you to sneak in a short run or a quick workout. If all else fails, there is a Fitness First located in 100AM (approximately 2 minutes stroll away from the hotel) where international members can gain access to.
I will cover Cin Cin (a gin bar located within the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore) in a separate post but if you are looking for a drink and you are not sure what to order, try the Earlgroni here at Cin Cin (which pays tribute to a classic Negroni) containing Bulldog Infused Earl Grey, Campari, Carpano Antica Formula, Dr Adam Elmigirab Bookers as well as a Dehydrated Orange Garnish.
The Club Rooms at the relatively new Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore are pretty amazing - if you book away in advance, it is possible to get a Club Room (complete with the whole Club Floor and Club Lounge experience) for just S$240++ - remember if you sign up for the mailing list, you may be eligible for a further 5% off your next stay. I went to the hotel thinking that the Club Rooms will essentially be no different from regular rooms with club access but boy was I wrong. The whole Club experience at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore truly changed my opinion on how companies and properties can add value to a guest's stay. If you are looking for a unique weekend staycation experience and you are looking at just staying in and enjoying the facilities, you seriously cannot go wrong with the Club Rooms here at the Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore!
This was a hosted media stay, though all views expressed are my own.
