Hotel Review: The St. Regis Singapore (Caroline Astor Suite)
The St. Regis Singapore offers luxurious accommodation for distinguished travellers who are looking for a hotel around the Orchard and Tanglin area in Singapore. While I have previously stayed in an Executive Deluxe room at the St. Regis Singapore, I saw a really good rate towards the end of 2015 when they were running some flash sale and have therefore decided to take advantage of it. I have to admit that the stay was largely motivated by my incredible stay at The St. Regis Bali Resort earlier in November..
I spent the weekend in the luxurious Caroline Astor Suite at The St. Regis Singapore. I was initially supposed to be upgraded into the lead-in category St. Regis Suite but was further upgraded into the Caroline Astor Suite due to high occupancy (always a good thing when you have elite status with the loyalty program!). With floor-to-ceiling windows, the Caroline Astor Suites enjoy plenty of natural light in the day. The opulence of the suite is further accentuated by clean lines and lush, hand-tufted carpets as well as embellishments by the leading Thai Silk company, Jim Thompson.
During check-in, I have also opted for the 250 bonus Starpoints as a welcome amenity for being an elite SPG member. After being shown to my room and having my weekender bag delivered to the suite, I was introduced by my very own butler who offered to unpack my luggage. I politely declined and asked for a glass of iced latte instead - as mentioned in my previous hotel review, coffee and tea is served on a complimentary basis and tipping is absolutely optional (though encouraged!).
I also received a plate of macarons and fresh fruits as part of my in-room welcome amenity.
The Caroline Astor Suite that I was in has an odd layout - the different rooms are somewhat partitioned and compartmentalised without a sequential flow. Coming through the main doors of your suite, you'll find the minibar as well as basic coffee and tea-making facilities. From here, you will be faced with three different entrances that will bring you to either the living room, bedroom or bathroom.
The living room of the Caroline Astor Suite offers an expansive view of the Embassy district as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It is amazing how peaceful and quiet Tanglin (where The St. Regis Singapore is located at) is while still remaining close enough to Singapore's most famous shopping strip, Orchard Road.
Should you wish to have a clear distinction between work and play, the living room offers a beautiful leather-bound writing desk for your business purposes. Since I was here for a weekend staycation myself (and also to take advantage of the 2,015 bonus Starpoints promotion), I spent most of my afternoon on the plush divan in front of the television.
In the bedroom, you will find a luxurious The St. Regis Bed that is swathed in lustrous premium linens - trust me, you'll feel the difference once you've tried it. The room is all about getting the details right - look how beautiful that hand-painted silk wallpaper is! There is also a second television in the bedroom so you can enjoy the latest cable and satellite channels in the comfort of your very own bed.
My favourite part of the Caroline Astor Suite has got to be the opulent bathroom that features the beautifully-veined French Breche de Benou marble vanity tops. Double basins are also available so you do not have to share. Apart from the freestanding bathtub that you should spend most of your time in, you will definitely appreciate the jet massage shower with self-defogging mirror. As mentioned in my previous review of the Executive Deluxe room at The St. Regis Singapore, the mirrors are heated so it will not fog up - always the little details that make a stay amazing!
Bath amenities are provided by Remède Spa but I was a little surprised to see that the Caroline Astor Suites give out small-sized bottles (45ml) instead of the larger ones (70ml) that I got at the St. Regis Bali Resort. I would have thought that the suites at The St. Regis Singapore would have given out the larger bottles instead. There is also an ad notam TV that is integrated into the glass so you can watch some TV while enjoying a good soak. All the tub needs now is some bath salts to go with it.
The bathroom is also connected to the bedroom via this walk-in wardrobe which makes it possible to enjoy a hot bath and a cold bedroom without experiencing the sudden change of temperature since you will be able to get dressed here in comfort. There is also plenty of space to hang your clothes and pressing can be done upon request - just call or email your butler. I have not tried the latter option personally since I think it may take some time for them to respond but I may very well be wrong! Also, you will not find an iron in the Caroline Astor Suite (much like the other St. Regis hotels that I have been to) but if you'd like one delivered up to your room, just tell your butler and he or she will see that that is done.
Another thing that The St. Regis Singapore excels in is recognising and rewarding Elite SPG members. Platinum SPG members and Suite guests will be invited to enjoy some drinks in the evening at La Brezza. This is not at all required according to brand standards so whatever that is provided by The St. Regis Singapore is over and above the norm - great job on that! It is always nice to see how much individual properties value their suite and elite guests by offering more than what is expected of them.
This Evening Soirée runs from 5PM to 7PM daily for suite and SPG Platinum guests and while I was there, there were serving up bottles of Zardetto Prosecco Brut, a selection of red and white wines, Tiger Beer as well as some juices and soft drinks. All of these happened in the back area of La Brezza which I guess functions as an intimate (but unofficial) club lounge. The food was nothing to rave about but as I have previously mentioned, this is completely at the expense of the hotel as it is in no way obligated to provide such services - maybe skip the food and load up on Prosecco instead.
You will notice the Christmas decorations along Tanglin Road since I stayed during that time but you will also notice how peaceful it is (especially so at night). My suite also overlooked the Regent Singapore (which houses one of my favourite Italian restaurants) where I returned to Basilico for lunch during my stay.
As an esteemed guest of the Caroline Astor Suite, you will have the option of either having a full buffet breakfast at Brasserie Les Saveurs or the private dining menu to have your most important meal in the privacy of your own suite. I opted for the former option since I generally do prefer a great variety and besides, I was really craving for The St. Regis Epicurean Omelette. Having been to breakfast at Brasserie Les Saveurs twice, I have to say that this meal period is definitely their weakest link - it's difficult to get someone's attention and it feels as if it is severely understaffed. Getting your orders in is difficult but getting a table right next to where the food is cleared (yup, I was lucky enough to be given that on this occasion) is incredibly disturbing.
Once you get past the breakfast madness however, you will see all the good things about The St. Regis Singapore - that lovely pool is a delight to swim in and as a hotel guest, you do get access to the Remède Spa's wet lounge so be sure to take advantage of that!
The St. Regis Singapore remains to be the best Starwood property that I have been to in Singapore (even though Four Points by Sheraton is opening this year and the addition of two new Design Hotels here may shake things up a little). I really enjoyed my stay in the Caroline Astor Suite and I love how much space you get to enjoy with the suites (even the lead-in rooms are really spacious!).
